Let's Pretend

Let's pretend

That I'm the queen and you're the king
And that we rule a kingdom where
The sky is made of sapphires, the fields are emeralds and the sunlight is golden.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
That I'm a brave knight on a fiery steed
Slaying the monsters hiding under my bed
And then riding straight on until morning.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
That someone is sitting next to me
Who actually wants to be there
Instead of just the far off noises of play.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
I can smile through it all
While trying to forget
The sour smell of his breath.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
That I can breathe today
After many nights of tears and whispered secrets
And the only ones who know them are the stars.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
That I can fly
Far far away from this strange land
Because here no one is very kind.
Let's pretend.

Let's pretend
That when I wake up today
I smile because someone made me laugh
And I cry because I care.

Let's pretend together?
