The Last Summer

And in that summer we seemed infinite
Hair streaming behind us as we flew
Down the neverending driveway
Pebbles skidding out of the way
Of our whirling wheels
Shoelaces flapping against the spokes
Centimeters from a deadly tangling
But we didn't stop
To tie them tighter
We felt invincible
On the path of parted golden seas
Surrounded by dewy morning glories
Like them, we looked up too
At the bright but never burning sun
Forward we raced
To the glinting dented still standing mailbox
And when we arrived
To find nothing waiting for us
We simply turned around
Knowing in our hearts that it was the journey
And not the destination
That we would remember
2500 days later.
