At Last

Sun, 12/29/2013 - 19:41 -- Kaelyn

Day after day in this room,
all I am, all I know is to their slave.

Day after day, I see the others,
young and old, male and female, all locked away.

And day after day, everyone sits, resigned,
resigned to a hideous fate, to a cold ending.

It is so dark, the lights dimmed;
down to the point they’re no longer there.

It is night outside, but darkness obscures
no moon or stars to guide the way.

But the breeze, so minute it is a hallucination
whispers quietly, “Hold on, just hold on.”

For someone special, hold on.
For the sake of the future, hold on.
For yourself, hold on.

The shouting outside is loud,
what is going on… why not the usual whispers?

The sound of pounding feet, of running fills the air,
and inside the dark, cramped room, breathing hitches, tempo rises.

The door opens with a loud bang,
and all stills, eyes look up in fear, in anticipation.

But there is kindness in their eyes,
a spark that hasn’t been seen for so long.

And their voices too, lack the hard glint, the hatred
   and everything will be fine.

There is so much anger so much pain,
bottled up, building, hidden by everyone.

But they promise, the rescuers,
   that justice will be served.

Life will not be the same,
   how can it, after all?

But it will be better,
it will work out… just hold on.

The sun shines outside the windows as if nothing happen
how can the world be so oblivious?

But this is not a dream…
I’m free, at last, I’m free.
