Langston Taught me

Poetry is what soothes my soul

When the sky is blue

Or when the sky is grey

Poetry is there to brighten my day

One of my favorite poems Is by Langston Hughes

I, Too

I am the darker brother, he spoke

Hughes goes on to talk about being a how as a maid or butler

We were typically friends with our employer

But that friendship became nonexistent the minute company came over

Instead of being a friend we become a slave

But in the end Brother Hughes says it best

They’ll see how beautiful I am

And be ashamed

They’ll wish that when company had come over they had let me stay

I am on the path to greatness

This is my season to reap what I have sown

All the work I do will get me to great things

Persecution and injustice can cause me no harm

It’ll be worth the blood, sweat and tears

I’ll still have my wit and charm

Not to mention they’ll be envious of my skin

While they’re all wrinkly and baggy

I’ll be smooth and in tact

While they look older than their real age

I’ll get mistaken for 20 years’ younger

My melanin is what makes me special

Langston taught me that

I, too sing America.

I, too am America.
