Just One Beer

I said, “I only had one, just one beer.”
They trusted me to drive them home that night.
I said, “I’m fine; there is nothing to fear.”

Behind: with a picture perfect career;
everything wanted right there in plain sight.
I said, “I only had one, just one beer.”

The sweet sound of laughter upon one’s ear…
Her presence always induced such delight.
I said, “I’m fine; there is nothing to fear.”

A simple glance to the right: so sincere.
An angel smiles back. True love? It might.
I said, “I only had one, just one beer.”

A liar, a disgrace sitting right here;
So  impressive, cool, a fool full of spite.
I said, “I’m fine; there is nothing to fear.”

Flash backs, heart attacks, dry eye’s drop one tear;
The screams, the silence, the darkness of night.
I said, “I only had one, just one beer.”
I said, “I’m fine; there is nothing to fear.”
