The poem "Bastard" is about an alienated child born out of wedlock. S/he suffers rejection anywhere s/he goes; to mother, father and even grandparents. S/he gets neglected by everyone so much that not even school or Xmas parties are accessible. He feels he should be convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the "crime" of being a "unlawfully".

The poem intends to bring to perspective the attitude shown to children born resulting from unwanted pregnancies.
More often than not they suffer rejection and get negated for wrongs they never did. The miss the confidence that comes with the knowledge of "mum cares and dad loves me" yet they don't have the hope of if mum/ dad were alife, things would be different.
A good number end up not becoming much in life due to the negative energy poured into the inner recesses of their emotional beings.
Symbolically, the poem portrays how some minority communities get marginalized by government simply because they were not part of the coalitions that won elections. Or simply because are not many (tyranny of numbers).
