Infinitely Unique
Location
Different people wonder where I come from.
I don’t look different or nor do I try
But when I walk,
They see a confident-stride.
I say,
It’s in my happiness
The acceptance of people,
The complications in life,
The forgiveness.
I’m unique
Infinitely.
Infinitely unique,
That’s me.
I talk to people
Just as if I known you for a while,
And to strangers,
They hold my gaze or
Look down at their feet.
They slowly approach me,
A family of mice.
I say,
It’s in my smile,
And the way that I talk,
The twinkle in my eyes,
And my joyful laugh.
I’m unique
Infinitely.
Infinitely unique,
That’s me.
My friends have wondered
What makes me confident.
They wonder how
But they won’t know
My secret.
When I tell them,
They say they don’t understand.
I say,
It’s in the mirror,
The reflection,
The imperfection,
The details.
I’m unique
Infinitely.
Infinitely unique,
That’s me.
Now you should understand
Why my head is held up high.
I do not mumble or whisper
Or talk very loud.
When you see me passing,
I should stand out.
I say,
It’s in my stride,
The shoulders held up high
The catching of eyes,
The love I have for myself.
‘Cause I’m unique
Infinitely.
Infinitely unique,
That’s me.
This structure of “Infinitely unique” is based off of “Phenomenal Women” by Maya Angelou, because the short and meaningful words have a great impact. Although the structure used is similar to Phenomenal Women, I interpreted myself in this poem like Maya Angelou did herself in “Phenomenal Women.”
