The Inebriation of Conformity

Thu, 05/15/2014 - 15:10 -- B_L_E

Life is a fight,

But many of us hide behind conformity.

Hide behind the lie that we should be like the rest,

And give close minds the superiority.

But isn't it all a test?

Isn't it all a choice,

to silence one's own voice?

Then why do we become silent so quietly,

Forgetting we're unique,

and giving up our sobriety.

Sobriety in ourselves.

Sober in our thoughts because they are ours,

Not realizing that conformity devours.

It inebriates the mind,

and makes us forget.

Stumbling around looking a soldier,

When really your war will take time to be over.

You manage to slurr out the words of another.

Acting like this man beside you is your brother.

When really all he's doing is shoving more poison in your head.

He's no where to be found when you're on your death bed.

Twenty years later we wake up,

With a somber face trying to grab that coffee cup.

Aspirin in hand to handle that spliting headache.

This new sad reality that makes your soul quake.

You chose the world over yourself.

Got inebriated and had a good time.

Forgetting about your own health.

You have now realized your crime.

Your crime against yourself,

And now you must pay the price.

Both the victim and the culprit,

Life can't always be nice.

Being an individual may be hard,

But at least you're being true to who you are.

And you won't sober up twenty years later scarred.

I just wanted to tell you how much I loved this poem. Currently we are doing an Anthology in my English class, and we had to choose 5 of our favorite poems, and i chose yours because it gives me the inspiration to keep conformity out of my poetry. You are a great writer and I hope you keep at it!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much. That means a lot. I'm so privileged and honored that you included my poem in your Anthology. I really don't know what to say. I'm so glad you loved it, and I hope and I'm sure you are writing wonderful work yourself. Stay true to yourself dear and keep being amazing in the world. Again thank you so much! Oh I would also like to extend the invitation where we can keep in touch and trade work if you want. Just let me know and we can exchange emails. Alright stay cool. :)
