If They Can Do It So Can I

Thu, 10/29/2015 - 02:25 -- mycris

I’m from Martinelli's apple juice,

From windex and sqeeqee’s

I am from the painting of clouds dancing through the ceiling.

I am from white Alcatraz, the morning dew sliding down the grass

I am from Dia de los Muertos and Halloween treats,

From Mario and Lydia and Grace

I am from the story book castle and road trips.

From “Why don’t you have a dad” and “You don’t belong here.”

I am from plaid skirts and Friday service.

I am from Compton and Mexico City,

Tamales and arroz con leche.

From the caring of animals in Tony’s backyard,

The lizard green as an avocado,

And the adoption of stray dogs from Carmen.

I am from the memories in black and white,

Pictures slowly ageing as the people in the pictures age with them.

The torn photo album with young faces filled with hopes

And dreams to have a better life,

Unfamiliar faces page after page.

They survived hardships,

If they can do it so can I.
