If Only You Were Here

If only you were here,

You would have been able to kiss me goodbye

Wish me luck and try your best not to cry

As I drove off to learn and live alone

Instead, I had to tell your tombstone

If only you were here,

You could have watched me earn A after A

Listened to my excitement as you screamed "Hooray!"

Told me how I had to continue to behave

Instead, I had to tell your grave

If only you were here,

You could have met all of my new friends

They would have thought you were cool because you knew all of the trends

You could have celebrated with us as I drank my first beer

Instead, on my birthday you were not here

If only you were here,

You could have heard all about that stupid date

Listened to me cry as I only spat out hate

You would have told me, "time will heal"

Instead, I find that saying now to be a little unreal

If only you were here,

You could have watched me graudate next year

Supported me as I ventured out to find a career

Instead, I am just wishing you were here.
