If Naked Were Acceptable

If naked were acceptable, I would be silly, willy, proud

I would see reflected in mirrors the figure of my youth

I would get to sleep in nothingness, and wrap myself in clouds

And see me for who I am, and to others show my truth

If naked were acceptable, I would rule the streets and town

I would show off my own contemporary art on the pavement of Madison Square

I would spread my cheeks in laughter at Westboro Baptist Clowns

And rub my skin with cosmopolitan things like prejudice and freedom, how contraire

If naked were acceptable, I would share my secret to the world

No more hiding in the closets, scared of monsters both in and out my home

No more seeing other people scared of sharing hidden pearls

Those cultivated young, yet buried in pharaoh’s tomb

If naked were acceptable, oh how I wish I only could,

Could see no more graves desecrated of cracked spines and wrung necks

In a free nation under God to be hypocritical to freedom should,

Should never exist a system without its balances and its checks

If naked were acceptable, I could finally put down these cardboard signs

Those standing in rally, too, could rest their well-marched feet with no more trouble

But tired hands and tired feet must still keep strong this march of twines

And can only hope of one day where if only naked were acceptable

But naked is not acceptable, not to those who refuse to listen or see

Naked is not acceptable, and too many are left dreaming of a world where it could be
