I Was Told

I was told as a kid
that I was born in the best country.
The strongest, the bravest,
the hero of every story.

I was told as a kid
that some people just don't amount to much.
They struggle under the knife of the government,
but their lives were just designed tough.

I was told as a kid
that some forms of love aren't okay.
We must show those people how horrible life can be,
and we must make them cry in order to make them pray.

I was told as a kid
that a woman confident in herself isn't one worth keeping,
and if she was to become a victim of assault,
then it was her own crop she was reaping.

I was told as a kid
that I should always help those in need.
But the same people that told me this,
in their eyes, I saw nothing but greed.

I tell myself as a young woman
that I am born in the best country.
The strongest, the bravest,
the hero of every story.

I tell myself as a young woman
that this has to hold some form of truth,
because everyone must go through dark times,
everyone must pay their dues.

But the dues have been overpaid,
and there are movements being suppressed.
This is suppose to be a country of freedom,
but freedom for who? You would have to guess.

Our youth is too familar with fear,
but maybe that is for the best.
A slow, steady bulding,
we know there needs to be something created in which people will invest.

We are not an idle generation,
for we are more aware than we have ever been.
This country should be bracing itself,
because we are now ready to begin.
