I Remember

I Remember
I remember the cold, so harsh it hurt to breathe
I remember the fear, eating away at a little girl
I remember a father teaching his daughter to fight with a blade
I remember the screaming, echoing a ring in her ears
I remember the hunger, gnawing inside her
I remember a secret place for books, that let her be somewhere else
I remember the playground, sitting by herself
I remember the music, Neutral Milk Hotel in her head
I remember a fight, that would change everything
I remember, but I try to forget
