I Love You, My Dear

It’s been two whole years

She said with a cheer

Since our wedding day out on the Pier

“I love you, my dear”

He said as he touched her cheek with his lips so soft

His brown eyes were kind as he looked

Into her soft eyes of hazel green

She had just given birth to their first

Baby named Elizabeth Jean

“I love you, my dear” he said in her ear

As he brushed auburn hair from her eyes

Many years passed

And their love remained strong

Endlessly loving each year

It’s been twenty-five years

She said with a cheer

As she sent the kids off to their school

“I love you, my dear”

“You said that last year”

Every year that goes by says the same

“But my dear, it’s true

It’s because I love you

And I will be there by your side

When times are tough, I will never be rough

We’ll be gentle and loving and kind”

Sixty years had gone by

He sat by her side

As she laid on the bed

In the hospital west of the Pier

“Come near!” she begged

He leaned in close

And she whispered five words in his ear

“I love you, my dear”

She breathed out the last breath

But their love would never end

“Till death do you part”

It said in their vows

But nothing could keep them apart
