I am not my skin

Location

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And not seeing the power that is within,

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And not seeing the beauty that begins,

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And viewing it as nothing but the object of sin,

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And looking over me as if i were under your chin,

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And thinking it's okay to insult me and then grin,

I'm tired of you looking at my skin,

And perceiving me as a fish without a fin.

But instead look at me!

Look at me as someone as intelligent beyond her years,

Someone who distinguishes themselves beyond their peers,

Look at me as someone who wants to change the world,

Who wants to change the heart of every boy and girl.

I am of African descent,

And no i am not looking for any compliments,

I want you to do what is fair,

And not judge me by the twist of my curly hair,

I am more than what you see,

I am more than what i seem to be,

We are of broken chains,

And whipped backs,

We give gains to what is lacked,

We are of strong,

We are of bold,

We are the courage from what is told,

We are of strength,

We are of power,

Let us sisters not waste another hour.

We are the females that continue to push the heights,

We are the birds in the nest that are ready to take flight,

The struggles of are past made us who we are,

In the beautiful black sky we are that star,

We have enough inside us to make us go far,

We know that are complexion doesn't make us who we are,

So instead do not look at the color of our skin,

But of the beauty and strength that lays within.
