I am a different color, yet the same color
I am filled with new ideas, but think the same thoughts
I am an individual, somehow I belong still to a group
Just like my ancestors, their ancestors, or whoever came before me
I am often judged, yet never understood
I am seemingly always discouraged, but never phased
I am a diamond in the dark sunless mine I habitat, somehow I still shine
Like an unfavored pet, car, material possession, or whatever you choose to compare me with
I am average height for my king, yet I stand taller
I am trapped like a beast, but inside my own freedom
I am born into an unequal system, somehow the aspirations for greatness never waiver
Call me Black, African-American, Colored, a Minority, whatever you choose to think me.
