How Do We Fly

In this great big world,

we are raised.

Seventeen years

under our parents' wings

before we are shoved into the real world

in our eighteenth year.

How are we expected

to make our own decisions,

to think for ourselves,

to be our own person,

when following our parents' rules

is all we've ever known?

How are we expected

to live in a democratic society,

when we lived under totalitarian rule

for as long as we can remember?

What do we do

when we finally have a say

in how to live our own lives?

How do we fly on our own?
