Dry leaves rattle, like
Old men’s breath
Boughs creaking, joints
Complaining copiously, arms growing
Strangely heavier, as they retreat
To spindle, stick dryness. Trunks bending, stooping,
Trying to reach back to the roots of the past.
At the creaking of the calendar
At the slowing of the seasons,
At the drawing of the day.
