Hollow

Disconnect
Between your culture and mine
I stay silent, except when you laugh
I laugh too, but it’s as hollow as the hole inside my chest
A hole that came with my deafness
You speak,
I can’t hear you.
I see your lips moving,
but I choose not to see.
Just like you choose to speak through me

I am a walking picture dictionary
Meant for kids and toddlers,
And you assume that.
Yet, you don’t understand my images
just like I don’t understand you
Quick to criticize me
But never quick to work hard
And I’m the one who can’t find work
You laugh, and I laugh
But it’s hollow, remember?

Sincerely, my parents
