HIDING

what are you hiding for

don't you know to be free

to feel free

you must let go

what are you hiding for

please just set yourself free

let your soul feel the feeling

of the ocean when no one

is at sea

like the sound of the drums

with rhythm and a beat

what are you hiding for

because she or he

will see who I really am

and what im meant to be

meant to be

you're nothing but a caged bird

waiting for someone to let it be

let it be

let it be, free

what are you hiding for

Writing this poem changed my life for the better. I was in the closet about who I preferred to love. It was hard for me to come out to anyone because of the fear of being judged and treated differently. Finally, as of recently, for my spring break I was able to visit my big brother who is like a father figure in my life. Someone who I hold close to my heart.  We were able to have a one on one dinner. I was able to come out to him through this poem I wrote. An evening filled with tears, relief, and most importanly, acceptance. Writing this poem help me be more open to who I really am and set me on a new path of finding peace withing myself. Poetry has taught me to just let go and be. My brother loved the poem and couldn't believe it was written by me. My life has changed since.
