Before Her Accident

Trees of red and orange burst from the ground
like fireworks.
Leaves shatter underfoot of
plaid-wearing passersby.
Wind sweeps across a
young woman’s face
to pull a strand of hair
from her polished chignon
into her eyes
as she rushes to grab her
five dollar latte.
she snarls at it then
shoves the strand behind her ear-

To no one:

“Can’t you see I don’t have time for this?”
