Give
I know
That I am
So Fucking
Lucky.
I have no fears
Of coming home
To fists and belts
To bruises and welts
And tongues
Sharp as knives, and just as cold.
No fears of hunger
Or war,
Or leaving all I have ever known behind
To face life in a dangerous new place,
Alone.
I know I am loved
And I know when I wake up tomorrow
There will be food, and water, and sunshine
And books to read
And knowledge to gain.
I know my future. I know I have one
And I believe in hope.
To change the world
I would give everyone
The part of myself,
Of my life,
That they need most
Be it a warm bed,
Or loving parents
Or safety
Or good health
Or faith
In tomorrow’s sunrise.
Maybe then
I’ll see more smiles
Walking down the street.
