That Girl

Location

Laugh all you want
At that girl over there.
She honestly does not
Give a single care.
Go right ahead.
Give her funny looks.
Laugh at that girl
For reading her books.
Call her mean names
Like “Loner” and “Nerd.”
Your judgmental mind
Will not cause her to hurt.
Whisper because
She's always alone.
Your cruel words
Aren’t sticks and stones.
That girl is a thinker,
And she loves to write
Works of fiction and poetry
About her life.
That girl is one
That few people see.
But that girl has changed.
That girl was once me.

This poem was based on my childhood, where I was always bullied because I hardly had friends, and I read a lot of books. I also wrote a lot, which made them bully me more. I decided that I would no longer give them power when I reached junior high.
