That Girl

There's a girl in my English class
who always looks out the window
and sketches little people on the side of her spiral notebook.
She bites her bottom lip
and taps her left feet.
And when the teacher calls on her
she tenses
eyes roaming
hands sweating
throat constricting
Sometimes she closes her eyes in the middle of class with her head
leaned back
but you can see her eyes moving beneath her eyelids
dreaming
hoping
And when class is over
she slowly trails her feet on the ground
a tiny gap between her lips
bony fingers trembling
but no one notices the tiny spark in her muddy brown eyes
That girl is me
