Hope
Is the candle that banishes the darkness.
And we’ll never understand
Why you chose to put it out.
We worried in the day,
But especially at night,
Where your mind would wander,
And where you’d be in the morning.
We hid your pills,
We sent you away,
Thought we made you safe.
Until the night when the demons
Kicked the floor out.
The clocks all stopped
As the light burnt out
And a new darkness engulfed the night.
Your coal turned to diamond
When the ore went cold.
Everything about you became important.
Memories became legends
Heard by young ears
In a painful, but tender voice.
And at the distant shore,
The tide rushed in,
Bringing debris from the depths of the sea
For us to salvage
And make okay again.
As surely as the tide,
These feelings roll in and out,
Beating away at the sandstone.
Day after day,
Week after week,
Year after year,
Forever and ever.
Out, out, brief candle.
