Generation

killing us off like worthless flies
citizens not, it was all just lies
and we cry out salty tears
to hide, cowards, from our fears
lost all morals and ethics and trust
it all got left behind in Homestead dust
they tell us we’re well and we’re doing just fine
but they haven’t a home and gather in the soup line
no child, they say, will be left behind
but the immigrant mother to the options is blind
and people go missing day by day
we acknowledge the loss and just turn away
today we look and we see all the pain
we’ve got everything to lose and nothing to gain
so we’ve got one chance, just one shot
to reap what we’ve sewn, return what we’ve bought
to heal Mother Earth that our own Mothers hurt
dig our knees in the mud, not afraid of dirt
Together We Can fix it all
Together We Can answer the call.

Really powerful - great rhyming structure here. My favorite line is definitely the play on no child left behind, tying education and immigration together.

no child, they say, will be left behind
but the immigrant mother to the options is blind

Hope you keep adding poems here.
