Gatsby had a point, and we should have listened

Aghast I throw my eyes to the stars and ask,

do they mean to lie to me, or is this why they shine?

But they can't answer, in their yellow twinkle,

over the rumble of how great we think we are, driven by personal gain.

Yet we fall behind and ever more arrogant,

not only in education but in morality; not realizing what we lose.

What is the true cost of love and acceptance?

Is it the false promise of something more to come,

yet that which we can not seem to catch due to vapid desires?

For as long as we can not unite and help one another,

chasing greed and looking for our own true green light at the end of the dock.

That which we think is true, when the opposite is so.

How noble are we when those who need help suffer because of our transgressions?

We stood once for something noble; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiesss.

Under a pale gold sunset, they cry, "but for whom?"

We haven't realized just how lost we are, in this fight.

But I keep my eyes locked on the stars during this march,

hoping they will only shine for me.
