On Friendship

Tonight, the silver moon might look like the universe giving you a frown.

But trust me, things like that come full circle.

In a night or two you'll find the sky grinning at you, but for now...

Here's my smile to scoop your heart from the ground.

It's made from days when the tunnel is so dark

Your eyes learn to adjust.

It's made from moments when a single drop can drown.

It's made from the salvation of learning how to swim, or of friends diving in.

Hey, I won't let the heavy night drag you down.

You can use my arms as crutches to keep you up

When the day knocks you over.

You can use them as a scarf

When the wind tears you apart.

For now, let's ignore the frowning moon and wish on shooting stars.

Let's spite the angry clouds and dance in its daughter rain.

We'll laugh at the gusting winds, and be each other's magic carpets.

We'll make friends, go on adventures, with the monsters in the dark,

And climb over that lonely mountain together.

We'll sit atop the clouds, and tightrope on their gray linings,

And tomorrow, when light cracks at dawn,

We'll greet it with our own smiles,

We'll tell the sun all about how we conquered the night,

And how we found the shortcut to the world's awesome treasures

In each other's hands.
