To That Foreign Girl in Math

Dear Lailia,

I don't really understand you,

and it isn't because of your language, culture

or because you enthrall my everything when you look at me.

You're so put together for someone from somewhere far away.

We breathe the same air, you just take mine away.

The way you say words wrong and how you "humor me"

as if you know what that expression means.

Yeah, I forgot we walked a two-way street.

Companero, you told your family back home

who are many miles that way and probably feel the same way I feel

when I sit beside you.

In math.

It's funny how something hated by two could put a plus sign between us

and make us one.

But you don't really understand me, do you?
