For the First Time

It is an endless sea of dry, desolate desert
Unimaginably hot, a blanket of sweat always present
There are constant explosions, pops of sniper guns
He's been in the middle of this hell for a year
The picture in his pocket keeps him going
His baby, he's never met her before
He has a pang in his heart, longing to meet her
It's finally time
The plane ride back home is never ending
Taunting him, dragging out time a mile long
He disembarks the plane, his heartbeat throbs
He looks for one thing among the signs and screaming families
A baby in an army uniform, instantly recognized
He has never run so fast
She is finally in his arms, her father's arms
A single tear falls down his cheek
The magic of a moment
