Fading Light

Location

We woke that morning to a pleasant surprise

So out of place we did not believe our eyes

From the ball of light our lives centered around

Come to our ears a miraculous sound

We prodded, we pampered, we catered a bit

But mostly we listened and smiled at it

Games were played and songs were sung

In this time, we were happy and young

Everyone noticed that the light was so bright

It hadn’t been lately, fear replaced by delight

Suddenly things changed and the light began to fade

The room began to darken and the cheer became decayed

Everything happened too terribly fast

The time for fun and games was long past

We gathered around the light, close as we could

Crowded in the small space we stood

We all joined hands as the light weakened

Our understanding of each other deepened

As the light finally went out

The room was filled with a horrible shout

For on this day, our world became a shade

A shadow of anger, a shadow of pain

Darkening the corners, the hidden spaces in our lives

Piercing every moment like thousands of knives

And as time goes by and we aimlessly wander

There are so many things that I must ponder

Why is the light out and why must everything change

And why are we all different and still all the same

I try to keep hoping and see the bright side

But the happiness is a mask that I hide behind
