The Empty Chair

An empty chair shows no promise
no light, no hope, none anywhere.

So you sit in the back of the classroom
and you watch, and you wish, and you stare, stare, stare,
Hoping against hope that he will be there.

And every day you sit on your perch,
seeking what's not meant to be found,
and jumping up when you hear a sound.

You can't go on living,
waiting for no one and nothing at all,
Leave that empty chair behind,
and be ready to brace the fall.
