Empty Cages.

In today's world, we hear about the civil rights movements in history class.
We think, "that was so long ago, does it even matter now?"
Most teens only think about our country now, not it's past.
But when I take a look at how
We got to where we are today,
I realize that the 1960's were not that long ago.
About 50 years ago, African Americans were treated in a way
That makes me want to cry. Just to know
That kids my age and younger were beaten and killed for something that wasn't their fault.
I think of what happened in Little Rock, Arkansas and how they couldn't go to that school
Simply because of their skin color. They were smart, and good students. That's not right at all.
I'm so glad that in this day and age, we actually practice the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments as a rule.
In truth, these amendments were created after the civil war,
Which is nearly one hundred years before the time of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Act.
Thinking of all these things makes me realize all I have to be grateful for.
Even in areas where I thought my life lacked.
The people who made it through those times, even if they aren't well known,
Are heroes to me, even when we tried to take away their wings, they have risen up and flown.
