Elegy for Leila

Connor
Elegy for Leila

Her navel marked room is now empty.
Thoughts of your small fingers tempt me.
I reach for the door handle ready to leave.
My legs fail me and I begin to heave.
I never met you--my everything.
Is it for you each night that my dreams sing?
You left her body but not her soul.
Now her chest forever has a hole.
I bid you a farewell my innocent daughter.
With each line I write my tears grow hotter.
I’ll hold your mother close as we wait here on earth.
You will join us soon in the form of new birth.
