Deadly Hues of Water

Dipping my toes

Into the endless midnight blue

To me,

it's a deadly hue.

First my ankles,

Then up to my knees.

Pause.

Remind myself to breathe.

My clothes are wet now

it's up to my waist

The water reflects

My grieving face.

My hands stroke the water,

How gentle,

How soft.

But it's beauty has a fatal cost.

Now the waves caress my shoulders,

Begging for me to come in.

It dares me to be scared of it,

but I'm not giving in.

So I hold my breath

and dunk my head

and look into the night.

I imagine when he did the same

all he saw was light.
