Cowboy

Broken shards of hearts
are dregs at the bottom of the teacup that is life.
But I suppose you always made it ok.
When I was a kid you would sleep in my room,
To keep the monsters away.
Those days were perfect.
I remember when we bought the farm and I had to work with you.
We were partners, I more then the other kids.
We would build fences,
And chop wood,
And tend to the animals.
You always had something to teach me.
You used to look so happy.
Sitting at the tailgate of your truck,
Coffee in your mug,
Pepper jack cheese, with apples from the orchard.
You would look you had to do with an air of familiarity
Like it was an old nemesis,
Or like a cowboy at high noon.
But there is no place for cowboys anymore.
That's why you feel so alone.
There is nowhere for you to plant your dirty boots,
Or nowhere for you to rough your way through.
Times have changed.
And they have left you behind.
