Cover Up

Every morning

Like pulling the blankets on

Rather than off

Gotta cover up

That ugly attitude

So my momma won’t see

Better cover up

My hot, sexy shoulder

So that boy doesn’t rise up

Ought to cover up

Any insecurity

Just so nobody can grab ahold

Every morning

I peel off the sheets

Only to pile on the make up

But not this morning

This morning I will let it all

“Hang loose”

Let the girl inside

Walk through the rain

Without an umbrella

Make sure the colors bleed

While the sad soul inside

Shouts to the clouds

Tell everyone how very much

This little white girl

Really feels

Today I don’t need a shade

I need a soapbox

Because I am going to be me

And I don’t need you

To tell me anything

Especially what to do
