Country music

The music told our stories

of backroad drives

It explained to the world

What made the backwoods thrive

No one could understand,

why we lived in slow motion

But country music took our good times

and gave it the notion.

The guitar sang the song

of the crickets in spring

The drum set beat our hearts

to the river front scenes.

The banjo was the freedom

of bonfires in the field

It pushed us Sunday mornings

to the front pew just to kneel.

It made us through the work week

by the sweat of our brow

We'd sing along and bale the hay

until the sun went down.

The steel guitar took my parents

back to the better days.

Now jacked up trucks and old shotguns

have filled our wild ways.

But no one else could understand

why we cherished where we live.

So the sweet, sweet sound of country music

explained just why we did.
