THE COST

He knows he’s found the one:

That very special girl.

Her love he’s finally won,

A treasured pearl.

She’s been searching for so long

to find someone she can trust.

And he helps her to be strong,

Through this world’s moth and rust.

They make a perfect match

And are never far apart

They’ve both caught their final catch

They knew it from the start.

Now there comes a day

He knows he must act soon,

So he sets a date in May,

And asks to be her groom.

The day is come, she’s all dressed in lace,

Driving to church, a text from her

Whilst almost to that place.

He looks away to answer.

Alas! If only he had waited,

She wouldn’t be so blue.

His last message to her stated

“I love…”

Even now she’s still alone.

She still thinks of it and shivers.

She never leaves her home,

Numbs the pain, ignores her liver.

Now what is left of a future and a dream?

A girl who won’t stop trying to forget

How they were the perfect team;

So uses any bottle to drown regret

If only he had driven with care,

If only paid attention.

If only she had been there,

“If onlys” she can’t mention.

Still wishes they’re together,

On this earth below him.

He shouldn’t have had to leave her

And force her light to dim.

I hope when you hear this tale,

You’ll listen and later recall

To always without fail

Drive carefully, for death constructs a wall.
