The Conditions of Love
Many a person has expressed a want
for unconditional love
but that's not what they really want.
I learned that the hard way.
Many people say things like "always", "forever" and "no matter what"
when they speak of love.
Most of them don't really mean it
even if they don't know it.
What they often mean to say
is something less comforting.
What they often mean to say
is something unforeseen.
Because
what they truely mean
is "I'll love you till you start to change"
or "I'll stay till life's rearranged"
or "I'll be with you when it' easy to be"
or "I'll love you long as you love me"
They mean that they will love you only if you love them more
or so long as you yourself do detest and deplore.
They mean they'll love you if their friends love you too
or they'll love you with no hardships nor trials to go through.
They'll love you only if, with them, you never disagree.
They'll love you assuming you'll get along with their family.
They'll love you provided you can magically read their mind.
They'll love you if you learn their souls in a short amount of time.
They'll love you if none of your love need they share with anyone
They mean they'll love you till all their love is drained
gone
and done
That's what they mean to say
