The Colors of my Heart

I have not one favorite color

I see them all the same

but the three that wave proudly

break rank and have names

the red flows freely

like blood from the heart

it stands for something gruesome

with no end

just a start

good men were lost

and husbands and fathers

on someone elses soil

across hostile waters

The white stripes of 6

make one simpe claim

were not all jabs and kicks

our flip side is tame

we offer peace and compassion

in times needed most

were for peace and not war

we don't often boast

take it not for granted

or think we'll just lie down

we keep our men stead fast

three stripes up

none down

blue holding stars

high in one corner

justice and strength

keeping freedom in our borders

some call it a secret weapon

some say we're too proud

our opinions will always

be spoken aloud

the stars of fifty

represent our states

and like those who protect us

band together and hold rank

these three colors

are the best in the world

keep your anger off my soil

or your mind will be swirled
