Color in a World of Black and White

Location

The world around us,
It’s filtered every day,
Turning it Black and White.
The personality of the
Person next to you
Hidden by the social norms.
Our very thoughts,
Our feelings,
Actions,
Words,
Life,
Our everything,
Filtered away
Into nothingness.
Hidden by what
Society says is
Correct.

But then come the few moments.
The moments when that filter is removed.
I can become me.
I can study my languages,
I can dance like nobody is
Watching me,
I can sing loudly,
Off-key,
Just enjoying the words coming out of
My mouth.
I can kiss the ones I love,
I can hug my
Non-sibling
Siblings.
I can talk freely,
Mixing in
Nihongo,
Italiano,
Lingua Latina,
Deutsch.
I can lose that filter,
I can be someone
Other than that proper
Young lady, speaking little
Until spoken to,
Sitting still, waiting for
Her chance to leave.
Her
Chance
To
Break
Free
From
That
Damned
Filter.
To shatter that glass cover,
Hiding her from the world.
To shatter the expectations
Of the filtered world around her.
Those moments start to come
Faster and faster

Then I realize,
I have shattered my filter,
I have lost my
Compliance to how,
According to society,
A person should act,
Feel,
Exist.
This is who I truly am.
A geek.
A scholar.
A nerd.
A writer.
A person.
Unfiltered forevermore,
In a filtered world.
Color in a world of Black and White.
