The Cave

Location

paranoid, thunder-swept in the cave orifice
he stands, a tall boy with a brave, wooden blade
eyes shining ludicrous with the dark anger of Jupiter
his fingers absently running through the dog’s murky hair

the dog’s eyes are narrow and black
interspersed with white flecks of lighter things
running its steady paws through the dirt and gravel
panting at the unfathomable, purple light

looking into the dull, fearsome face of obscurity
the face of the cliff with a maw-like opening
the boy knows only that he is nobody
staring into the cave like the jaws of a dragon

fruitless machinations at the perplexing purple light
that illuminates naught of the cave and comes from nowhere
that reaches with limbs that expand and contract
to the rhythm of breath that seeps from glacial lips

azure-faced, glass-eyed, and languid—the boy doesn’t move
just stands on some forgetful precipice with his dog
as dearth offsets the enduring pant of naivety
and the boy starts to sunder, to crack like cold stone
