Canvas of Personality

Everyone's got a canvas

Their personalities put on display

But years ago I tried to cover mine with a layer of gray

I didn't want others to see or judge

The colors I tried to disguise

I couldn't deal with the criticism of their harsh looking eyes

Despite my efforts to blend and fade

The gray layer started to crack

A few of my colors started to show

And some people wanted to see what my canvas lacked

They grabbed my hands and lifted me up

They made me face my altered piece

And carefully we peeled back the paint

That hid what should be seen

They helped me see my colors bright

They taught me not to be so afraid

Those people who became my friends

Made me what I am today

For without their help how could I

Have let my canvas free

Or ever learned how to be happy with simply me?
