Butterflies in My Belly
The night I told you that I believed in magic,
I looked you in the eyes as if for the first time
and found love there, like when I was a little girl
digging in the backyard for gold
and unearthed treasures of a different kind.
You stood in the dark looking down on me,
your eyes as big as moons, stars spilling
from your lips as they met mine,
my breath caught in the nets you had cast with uncertainty.
You gave me monarch butterflies
to migrate in my belly, and I gave you perennials
that only bloom in season.
