As a Black Girl
As Black girls, we are under the most pressure to be great.
We have to stay calm, collected, and classy
All day, every day; because we’ll get all types of labels.
As a Black girl, we get these labels from everyone,
Even sometimes within our communities.
As a Black girl, if we complain, we’re “doing too much.”
But if the White girl does it, it’s socially acceptable.
As a Black girl, if we dress the wrong way, we’re looked at as "fast."
But if the White girl wears it, she’s “cute” or “seductive.”
As a Black girl, if we use our slang,
We’re called “ghetto” or “ratchet.”
But if the White girl uses what we've, it’s “cool” and “trendy.”
As a Black girl, if we express even the slightest anger,
We’re an “Angry Black Woman.”
But if the White girl does it,
It’s a “normal emotion everyone experiences.”
We constantly get mistreated by everyone.
Acting as though we’re not good enough.
Even women, who are supposed to lead us,
To uplift us,
Tend to put us down
While praising the man
For every achievement he has.
As a Black girl, so much is expected from us.
We have to work twice as hard.
We are the future of a new age
Of the Black community, and America as a whole
But yet they continue to treat us like garbage.
The world isn’t as bright as it seems
In the life of a Black girl.
We have to make a change now
When we are Black women,
And have little Black girls of our own.
