Best Friends, Sisters

This is a poem to my best friend Anna,
Who has stood by my side since the carefree days of childhood,
And whose smile and unmistakable optimism
Have shone through the clouds of my darkest days.
Your laughter has broken the silence of my thoughts,
With your ears a drain for my countless stories
That you’ve heard a thousand times before,
While your mind has challenged me to think in new ways.
There were times when we laughed so hard
Tears rolled down our faces like raindrops on a cool, spring afternoon,
And there were also moments when we just needed to scream,
But either way you were there.
You picked up the pieces of my shattered heart
When it was thrown around carelessly.
And as I drowned in a sea of loneliness,
I discovered that I was not alone at all
Because you fought the current of my destructive demeanor and rescued me.
You have witnessed my ultimate highs
And watched as I’ve crashed down into my lows,
Always holding out a hand to lift me up again.
Now I know that certain people are meant to be present in our lives .
