Best friends forever.
That’s what they said.
Your necklace,
And my bracelet.
I saved a picture of you
In the heart shaped locket
On that pink chain.
And with hopeful eyes,
We waited for the warmth of summer.

Sunny days,
Under a canopy of green leaves.
Laying in the lush grass.
Making pictures in the clouds,
Side by side with you.
We make eye contact.
You smile.
And so do I.
No words are needed,
For you know exactly how I feel.
You know me all too well.

Starry nights.
Sleeping bags and a small fire,
Underneath a roof of black velvet
With tiny little holes,
From which they look down at us,
Those who we have lost.
And as we lay there,
A silent tear leaks from my brown eyes.
You look at me and nod silently.
I don’t have to say anything.
You know my pain and my hope.
You know me all too well.

Summer days
Fade away all too fast.
Just as soon as it has begun,
Winter begins to invade our childhood sanctuary.

“Nothing could ever come between us.”

What happens when that promise
Becomes nothing more than a question?
Forcing its way into our lives
Because there is no time to spend together.
No time to look at the clouds
The ground is too cold to lay on anyway
White never looked so ominous
Winter came and chilled our friendship.
You lost your necklace.
And I misplaced my bracelet.
But you still knew me
All too well.

Over time, the seasons change
Warm to cold then cold to warm
But our friendship didn’t last
That first winter
Wherever you may be,
My friend... my dear friend
I hope you remember
All our summer days
And I hope you smile
When you remember me.

This poem was written in honor of an old friendship that slowly slipped away. Even today, I still can look back and smile about the good times that we had before life took us in opposite directions.
