Being a kid was easy…

I’m 13 years old, it’s 6 in the morning and the sun’s starting to shine through the window,

My mother comes in and rubs my back to wake me up,

I roll over “I’m up, I’m up,”

She leaves the room.

It’s 6:15 now and I still haven’t left the bed,

My mother comes in not as pleasant as before “you’re going to be late to school,”

I sit up in bed “I’m up, I’m up,”

She leaves the room.

It’s 6:30 now and she comes in angrily,

She yanks the covers off my bed “It’s time to get up! Now you don’t get breakfast!”

I get out of bed “I’m sorry, I’m up”

She leaves the room.

It’s 6:45 now and she’s driving me to school,

“You need to get up on time, you know how important school is,”

I roll my eyes “I’m sorry, I know,”

She drops me off.

I’m 22 years old, it’s 6 in the morning and the sun’s starting to shine through the window,

My alarm starts buzzing incessantly,

I hit the snooze “I’m up, I’m up,”

The alarm stops.

It’s 6:15 now and I still haven’t left the bed,

My alarm comes on louder than before “you’re going to be late to school,”

I hit snooze, sit up in bed “I’m up, I’m up,”

The alarm stops.

It’s 6:30 now and my alarm goes off for the final time,

I throw the covers off my bed “It’s time to get up! Now I don’t get breakfast!”

I get out of bed “I’m up, I’m up”

The alarm stops.

It’s 6:45 now I’m driving to work,

“I need to get up on time, I know how important work is,”

Being responsible is tough,

I arrive at work.

I’m an adult now,

The time is irrelevant, I’ve got things to do and places to be,

I’m accountable for my actions and only I can get myself to where I need to be,

Being a kid was easy…
