Being an adult

Being good at spelling bees
Aren’t much of a thing to show off anymore
I’ve grown so much taller
But things to show off are disappearing

When I’m in the car
The stars that used to follow me
Now don’t shine
I’ve grown so much taller
But the sky seems so much higher

People say I’m an adult
But only things that aren’t adult-like keep increasing
Everyone tells me I’ve grown
But why am I getting so much smaller?

The kid smiling in the picture
Where is she now?
Becoming an adult
Is it about smiling even when you’re sad?

You’ll know when you grow up
I still don’t get that saying
Living each day by holding things inside
Is that what becoming an adult is about?

That’s life, I guess
I think I know but there are so many tomorrows left
All those stars, where are they now?
Have you guys become adults too?
